Failed Adoption

Thursday, the birthparents we were matched to called to say that they had changed their mind and would be keeping the baby after all. The baby was born on Friday.

We had been matched with them for five months. They had always seemed so committed to the adoption -- it was a huge shock to get the phone call.

We are very sad.

I lost your email address so I came by here to check and see how you guys were doing. I've been thinking about you these days and hope your forever match comes through soon.

Do you think it would make more sense if the law was set up so that the baby had to be born and the mother and father had to relinquish parental rights first, before any "matching" was done?

That way, people wanting to adopt would not be on pins and needles and the parents who were unsure prior to birth would not feel obligated to surrender their son or daughter once they held him/her in their arms. True, the adoption businesses would make less money, but then again those children who had parents that were willing and able to keep them would not be turned into orphans unnecessarily.
